Fall Into Better Hearing: Why October Is The Best Month To Start
There is something about the beginning of fall that feels like a fresh start! Summer has come to an end, the days start to feel a little more structured and our fall routines start to settle in place. Naturally, we also start spending more time indoors and with the people around us.
Those are just a few reasons why I personally think that October may be the best month of the year to start your journey to better hearing. If you’ve been thinking about having your hearing checked or wondering whether hearing aids could help – Fall is the perfect time to start.
As many of us know, the summer tends to be busy. Days on the patio, cottages or camping, outdoor barbeques and everything in between. But as the weather cools off, naturally life moves indoors. And indoor environments can be particularly challenging for someone with hearing loss. Family dinners, restaurants, watching TV or trying to follow along in a conversation with multiple people talking are all everyday moments where hearing difficulties become most noticeable.
September often feels like a transition month; however, October is when things start to settle. Work and school routines are established, weekends become more predictable and overall, life just feels little less chaotic than it did in the summer. That makes October an ideal time to introduce something new, including hearing aids.
Getting comfortable with hearing aids is a process. Your brain needs time to adjust to hearing sounds differently and you may need a few appointments along the way to fine-tune your devices to ensure they are working well for you. Starting in October gives you the time and space to do that without feeling rushed and gives yourself an adjustments window before the holidays.
We don’t want to wish time away, but we know that the days go by fast! October quickly becomes November and November turns into December. Suddenly the calendar is filled with family gatherings, dinners and celebrations. And for someone with hearing loss, these can be some of the most difficult listening environments of the year. October gives you a head start.
It gives you time to:
Get your hearing assessed
Explore whether hearing aids are the right solution for you
Become comfortable wearing them, using them & caring for them
Make adjustments if necessary with your hearing care provider
Build confidence before the hustle and bustle of the holidays
By the time December rolls around, your hearing aids don’t feel “new” anymore. They have simply become part of your everyday routine.
If you’ve been thinking about your hearing for a while, consider this your sign to stop putting it off. Fall into better hearing this October. Your future self & maybe even the people sitting around your table this holiday season will thank you for it.
